For 800 years, the Earth has been entering a period of increasing global temperature. The natural cycle of global warming is oscillating towards an estimated peak of 73 degrees centigrade, due in a further 3,000 years, at which point the planet will again begin to cool.
With rising temperatures came rising infant mortality, and with that came desperation, and over-breeding. As habitable areas of the planet became scarce, those remaining on the surface have been forced to adopt impossible lifestyles.
Although the 'third-world' is all but vaporised, the relative poverty of the planet has remained constant, squalor spread equally throughout the overworked population.

Advances in space travel have been expedited by necessity. Although the reduction in habitable land to just 20% of the Earth?s surface has lead to a unified world culture, each nation was forced to establish independent space exploration agencies during the early part of the third millennium.
These agencies compete in their single objective: discovery of a habitable planet. To date, NASA operates 37 launch sites throughout the central USA, with thousands of space craft and orbiting installations inhabiting the border zones of the Sol system.
The only agency with more operational craft than the USA is the USSS - the United Soviet Space Service, founded upon the re-establishment of the USSR in 2132.

The crew of the Russian Space Exploration Unit SEU-09 are on a hopeless retrieval mission, the probe being recalled carrying a meagre chance at delivering data on a new habitable planet.

Discovering the AIKA Capital Ship drifting in space, the crew will discover that man's true enemy in this bleak future is not the temperature, but - quite literally - man himself.
